There is much to be gained by practicing the spiritual discipline of Scripture memory:
- Gives us the ability to fight against sin (Psalm 119:11)
- Helps us to trust in the LORD (Proverbs 22:18-19)
- Provides guidance (Psalm 119:24)
Memorizing Scripture helps us avoid being a “hearer of the word and not a doer” (James 1:23). As we meditate on God’s Word throughout the day, our faith is strengthened and we bear God’s image to our neighbors, co-workers, and family. God calls us to action through his Word and there are blessings for those who obey.
Children have amazing abilities to memorize, and the material they commit to memory during childhood often stays with them throughout their lifetime. We have the opportunity to help children store up the Word of God, which will produce life-giving fruit throughout their lives.
Each Sunday, the children’s church classes review one of the Foundation Verses. These are meant to establish a solid understanding of basic biblical truth.
May we be people of God’s word. Let us store it in our hearts and minds, having it ready on our lips, that our lives would be a pleasing aroma to our God.
Incline your ear, and hear the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge,
for it will be pleasant if you keep them within you,
if all of them are ready on your lips.
That your trust may be in the LORD,
I have made them known to you today, even you.
Proverbs 22:17-19
